Filing Your Homestead Exemption in Dallas!
By Debbie Murray
Remember that if you purchased a home in the Dallas area last year and owned this property as a primary residence on January 1st of this year, you are eligible for a homestead exemption.
Filing for your homestead exemption is simple with online technology. Visit the website of your taxing authority (EX: Dallas Central Appraisal District or Collin Central Appraisal District) for more information. The district websites explain the exemptions for which you may qualify and the forms are online for you to complete. Filing for an exemption to lower your property taxes is FREE, therefore, do not pay any entity who may offer to file your exemptions for a fee.
Be sure to complete your online homestead exemption application well before May as the taxing districts send out their appraised values at that time. Your estimated taxes will be enclosed and you may pay more if you have not filed your application.
If you purchased a home this year, mark your calendar to file your homestead exemption sometime after next January 1st.
